A Great Rocket Aug 27, 2009
By Thomas E. Tweedel The Red Max is a great rocket. It was one of my favorite rockets as a kid so when I got back into rocketry with my son it was a must have. But emotional memories aside it's a good rocket for a variety of reasons.
Overview
In as far as parts and assembly this is a pretty standard "modern" rocket. There have been changes since the 80's.
The rocket comes with laser cut BIRTCH fins (no more tracing on balsa wood) . You can snap them out if your careful. Best to use a knife.
The nosecone is now made of blown plastic vs balsa. Its already cast black so you don't need black paint to match the color scheme. The shock cord now attaches to a molded in plastic bracket on the nosecone.
It comes with a nice large parachute. Due to some govt restrictions somewhere on printing on plastic the parachutes are now white but you can use markers on them.
Assembly is pretty standard. Two things of note is that the thickness of the fins means you get to sand the leading edges of the fins round. You also should sand off the parts that attached the fins to the birch stock. If you want your paint job to look slick you should also sand down the surface of the fins. 220 Grit works well.
The thick tube and fins make the rocket easy and enjoyable to build. The elongated nosecone gives it a distinct look which I think is part of the appeal of the rocket. After its built it feels sturdy and rests well on its fins.
Painting is of course up to you. You can skip painting the nosecone and just hit it with some gloss clear coat.
After you've got it painted there are of course the decals. They are waterslide which while a little more difficult to work with initially give much better results than stickers. One big advantage of waterslide is that you can get it close and then slide it around on the rocket until its perfect. Can't do that with a sticker. They are part of the charm of the rocket.
Flight performance
Prepping the max for flight is nice, the oversized body makes it easy to pack the cute. Does take more recovery wadding through. The engine placement and fins make it easy to deal with loading and unloading the engine. The wider body seems to give it a smoother ejection, less wear on the parachute and shock cord and body.
The Red max is pretty stable in flight. Being very wide it won't quite get the height of some of the thinner rockets. It does fly fairly straight. It has a slower lift off and seems to have more reliable ejection. With the large parachute and body it drifts lazily down to a smooth recovery. This rocket does seem to have more time aloft under parachute. Something to consider if wind and trees are in play.
So to Sum it Up
Pro's
Fun to build
Stable
Easy Recovery
Con's
None Really
Conclusion
It's a great rocket to add to your collection.

A child's review Jul 26, 2010
By P. Ramos Having recently got into model rocketry, this was my first rocket. The only reason I actually chose was because I liked the colors and cool set of decals. And then it arrived. I immediately unboxed and read the instructions. I was amazed at how well I understood it! after buying all supplies that weren't included, the rest was simple If I hadn't waited about three days to try to strengthen the fins (I ended up messing up the fins, but was able to fix them) it probably would have taken about 2 hours to make.
The finished rocket is also pretty durable. It slipped out of my hands many times and banged against the ground, but that didn't even put a dent.
One thing a had trouble with were the waterslide decals. I completely messed up the majority of them, so only about 5 got on. Quite frankly, however, I thought it looked even better that way. Nice and simple.
After buying the motors and making the launch pad, it was ready to fly.
Me and my younger sister carried our rockets proudly, knowing we had no adult help. We went to a field and set up our stuff. After my sisters rocket failed to launch, we decided to try mine. I put it onto the launch pad, hooked up the controller, and stood back. Inserting the key and watching the red button flash and beep was very satisfying. When I pressed the button, I was actually surprised tat it worked. I watched it soar into the air and counted all the different stages of flight. At first I was so proud it worked so perfectly, until I realized how strong the wind was. The rocket went over to hills before we lost sight of it, and after a brief search, it is now lost FOREVER!
This is a great rocket and goes unreasonably high (don't launch on windy days). A great rocket for beginner or experienced rocketeers

very cool Sep 21, 2011
By GB I love the red max the paint and decals turned out amazing and the first launch was perfect, my dad actualy caught it. I would fly it on a B motor or it could just fall and might cause damage. A very fun and durable family friendly rocket!!
I recommend a dark glossy red paint job to give it a mean and sinister look
A very sturdy fillet always leads to a great flight!

best rocket ever Jun 17, 2010
By W. F. Maguire oh god I love this rocket. The one I just ordered is my 3rd I hope to have this one through more than 1 launch. The last 2 just went and went and went never to be seen again. A truly awesome rocket but if you do not have MILES of open field go with the B engine.

By Lima Delta I bought this model rocket for my son. It was the same model I built when I was in high school. I was glad to see it is still manufactured. It's a good, basic, reasonably durable model rocket - with some personality. Enjoy!
