Big performance from a little package Nov 24, 2005
By William J. Eichelberger
"I will not go quietly"
I built and flew my first Estes Wizard in 1979. I was initially impressed with the simple, but striking white/purple/black color scheme, but that all changed when I saw it fly. I loaded it with a C6-5 and in one of my less well thought out ideas, flew it from the front yard of my parents house. No one who saw that flight was unimpressed, myself included. Even though I lost the rocket when it landed in the rain gutter of a house at the top of the street, I never forgot how quickly it accelerated off the pad and how amazingly high it went. When I returned to the hobby in 2001, the Wizard was the only rocket in the Estes galaxy that I recognized from my younger days. In the 12 years since I had last seen the Wizard, Estes had seen fit to change the color and decal scheme to a blue and pink mess. Ugly graphics aside, the Wizard remains one of Estes great values AND performers.

Estes Wizard Rocket Jan 05, 2009
By Robert K. Jensen
"Space & Science Historian"
As a science teacher, we do a rocket build project at the end of our unit on spaceflight. Every year, I get the Wizard kits for my students. The directions are clear and uncomplicated. The rocket itself is light, durable, and very easy to assemble. One year, a different model was on sale and I bought them for my class. The competitor's rocket was more complicated to build and much heavier which caused it not to fly as high as the Wizard. Since then, I've gone back to the Wizard every time and the kids are always thrilled. Yes, the decals (stickers) are cheesy, but with some care and planning, a good paint job is more than adequate.

Fun Rocket to Fly Jul 05, 2008
By Mark C. Petzold I built this rocket for my youngest son (4 years old). He loves it, and asked me to hang it from his light in his room. We painted it black, rather than the suggested blue, and it looks great. The only issue is that the decals for the fins don't quite fit right, but he doesn't care.
We have flown it, and it really goes. With the largest engines, it flys well over 1000 feet, and recovers well. I'm sure we could break it, but it would also be easily repaired. It does eject its engine when the recovery charge blows, so watch out. Overall, it is a fun rocket to fly, and according to my 4 year old, the best rocket ever.

Had one of these as a kid Jun 20, 2010
By Tom L My first and only rocket in my childhood was a Wizard, and this one brought back some of those memories. With a C6-5 engine, this rocket really shoots up high (I'd recommend a B-size engine unless you like running a long ways). This rocket comes with a streamer instead of a parachute, which was disappointing, but it did not break when it hit the ground. However, my youngest son was playing with the rocket and one of the fins broke off, but I have glued it back on (not sure if it will fly the same yet).
These Estes rockets are a great way to bond with your kids, both in building them and launching them off.
Simple kit, great altitude, wings are a challenge Jan 15, 2012
By nathan mcafee I bought a bunch of these for my 5th grade students. The fins are a shipping to get straight. Make sure to use tacky glue to get them stuck on the body then reinforce with a bead of glue after this initial hold on the fins.
I drilled holes in a scrap piece of wood and stuck pencils in them. This let us work on the rocket upside down and do a better job on the fins.
Get the fins straight and you will have a high flying rocket.
