5Outstanding training tool for novice and skilled RC pilots!  Feb 13, 2012 By Kenneth Marcum "Harley Man"
I purchased this RC flight simulator from a local hobby shop. I paid $199.99 for the package that included the "Helicopter Megapack" (a must have if your learning to fly RC helicopters, or just want to keep your skills sharp).

What's in the box:
You will receive the software CD containing over 80 aircraft and over 30 flying sites (fields), a very realistic 8 channel, mode 2 transmitter attached to a USB wire to plug into your computer. You'll also get a couple of adaptor wires to use if you want to use your own Futaba or Spektrum transmitter, or to have two pilots fly for training or competition. Inside the CD case, you will find the manual. The manual seems a little vague, but useful. If you get the helicopter megapack, you will receive a second software CD that will contain an additional 45 helicopter models. If you get the airplane megapack, your additional software CD will contain an additional 35 airplane models.
Note: The radio for the helicopter version does not have the "ratchet" feel for the left (throttle/rudder) stick, but there is a ratchet spring included in the box if you wish to swap out the "smooth" feel of your throttle stick for the more common "ratchet" feel. Swapping this spring out takes a Phillips screwdriver and about five minutes. The radio for the airplane version has the ratchet spring already installed.

What is Mode 2:
The software and radio are set up for "mode 2" pilots, which means for airplanes, the left stick is throttle and rudder, while the right stick is elevator and aileron. For helicopters, the left stick is throttle/collective (altitude up and down) and yaw (rotation), while the rights stick is pitch (forward and reverse fly) and roll (left and right cyclic fly). Mode 1 radios would basically be the opposite. Modes 2 is the most common radio configuration for leisure and sport flyers in the United States, but mode 1 is generally most popular everywhere else in the world. Mode 2 is considered to be a much easier configuration to learn on for right handed flyers. Left handed flyers may find mode 2 more difficult, and wish to consider the mode 1 version, but that boils down to personal preference.

Is it worth the money:
Yes! If you consider everything that you are getting above, and the fact that if you use this regularly, and gain skill from it, in time, you will save at least the cost of this simulator in repair costs of your aircraft. In other words, it will pay for itself. If you're not an RC pilot and are simply looking for a "Game", this may seem a bit pricey. Besides, there isn't much "game" to it. It's a skill honing sim, designed for pilots.

Installing the software:
Is simple, but you must log on to your computer as "Administrator"... More on that below. All you have to do is place the CD in your computer's drive and follow the instructions. It doesn't get much easier than that. Be prepared to wait for about three to five minutes for full installation, maybe more, depending on the speed of your system, as you are loading about 5GB of information onto your computer's hard drive. RF6 does NOT require the CD to operate fully after installation. After installation, the CD should be removed from your drive and kept as a backup. Read the product description posted here to make sure you have the minimum requirements to use this software and its features. If you are still unsure if RealFlight 6 will work on your computer, simply visit the Realflight webpage at: Sorry, Amazon wont allow a URL, but if you go to "realflightDOTcom", select "Downloads", you can get the FREE RF6 demo. Bare in mind that the demo must also be downloaded and ran while logged on to your administrator account. You will have to use your keyboard to fly the included aircraft, but at least you will know if your system can handle the graphics and at least some of the features. If the RF6 demo will work on your computer, so will the full version. The free demo is about 300MB in size and can take a few minutes to download depending on your connection speed, so be patient.
Note: Make sure you have the latest greatest drivers for your graphics card. If you're not sure what card or chipset you have or how old it is, here is a way to find out: Go to your start menu, click "Run command". In the field, type: "Dxdiag" and hit enter. At this point, you may be asked if you want to display digitally signed updates (or something to that effect). If you see this window, click "yes". If not, you will get a window that will have the following tabs: "System", "Display", "Sound 1" etc. Clicking the "Display" tab will bring up all the information you will need about your graphics card. Once you have this information, go to your graphics card manufacturer's website and check for the most recent driver updates for your card. Having the most recent drivers will help your simulator operate more smoothly. Older drivers, even just a few years old, may cause your aircraft to fly somewhat jerky with delayed responses to your transmitter inputs.

Flight characteristics:
I purchased this simulator to keep both my airplane and helicopter skills sharp when I can't be at the field... Because to me, it's not like riding a bike. I tend to lose skill as time goes by if I'm not flying. I have found, for the most part, that the flight characteristics are extremely accurate for the different airplanes and helicopters simulated in this pack. Any RC pilot can tell you that no plane is perfect on its first flight. You will almost always have to adjust trim, or add counterbalance weight, or for the electrics, you may have to move the battery around to get a good center of gravity. The aircraft simulated here, are all flying with no wind, perfectly balanced and needing little or no trim first time out. So, if you wish to "up-the-ante" so to speak, and hone your flying skills even further, try adding some wind effects via the software settings as you fly with this simulator. It will increase the accuracy of the flight characteristics you will experience. Either way, if you can take off, fly and land the machines in this simulator, you will be able to transition to your real RC aircraft fairly successfully and enjoy repeated successful take-offs and landings. Every pilot knows that once in the air, you can screw up as much as you want as long as you don't crash. You can accidentally throw you aircraft out of control and be yanking the sticks all over the place in an effort to regain level flight, while your aircraft is climbing, diving, rolling and pitching, looping, performing split "S's", all completely unintentional! But, as long as you can make a nice landing, everyone watching will say "WOW, what an outstanding pilot! I've never seen anything like it!" You can wipe the sweat from your brow, take a deep breath and say "Yep, years of experience teaches you that!"

Realism:
The background graphics are extremely good, not the very best, but if you're a serious pilot who wants a simulator that is realistic in feel and aircraft response, you're likely not going to care that the background graphics are not as outstanding as some of the top quality video games available today. The majority of the flying fields are "3D" field which are computer generated. However, several of the flying fields are "photo-fields", which means a photo was taken of an actual field and used as a background. The photo-fields are very nice, and are my personal favorites. The graphics on the aircraft themselves are top notch! You will see some great detail on both the helicopters and airplanes. You will be able to watch as all the control surfaces actually move on every aircraft you fly, not just on the ground, but even as you fly by and pull back on the stick, you'll see the elevator respond just as it should. Several aircraft and the "3D" fields have different points of camera/pilot view; such as cockpit, wing, tail, etc. If you're in the cockpit, the instrument panels are nicely detailed as-well. When flying, sudden turns and movements will cause the camera to move or bounce around a bit in response to the G-forces you would experience if you were actually in the pilots seat. Very cool!

Other nice options:
As mentioned, the radio as an 8 channel InterLink Elite by Futaba, so you know it's a quality unit. This radio includes a hi/low rate switch which means when the switch is on "Hi" rate, the servos will respond quickly to your input and will operate to their full extent, making your aircraft extremely aggressive. "Low" rate means the servos will respond slower and only about 2/3rds of their limit, making your aircraft very docile and easier to handle (low rate is a wise setting for novice pilots). You can also control flaps, landing gear, smoke trail and even open and close some of the canopies. For helicopters, you can switch between standard and sport modes for 3D flying with a simple flip of the toggle. If you suffer a crash, resetting the simulator and starting over is as easy as pushing the red "Reset" button on the transmitter. If you push and hold the red "reset" button, your last flight (crash) will rewind back into the air to any point you choose, so you can resume your flight - without crashing -. The transmitter also sports a menu and cancel button so you can select different aircraft, flying fields and other options right from your radio. Bringing up the menu gives you the option to select binoculars which will put a small window in the upper right corner of your screen that shows your aircraft orientation up close (a nice feature if you go so far out that you can no longer see your aircraft). You can also bring up "gauges" that will put a second small window in the upper right corner of your screen that will show airspeed, altitude etc. Selecting "Multiplayer" on the menu at the top of the screen and clicking "join" or "host" allows you to join an online "fly-in" or create your own to pit your skills against other pilots from all over the world via the internet (This is about as close to a game as this sim gets). There are several more nice options that I'd like to mention, but doing that would turn this review into a book! Suffice it to say that you can set up your flying conditions any way you want, from as easy as possible to as difficult as you can handle with winds speeds from 1mph to 50mph.

Activating hidden administrator account:
Now, for the *not-so-fun* part. If you do not have an "administrator" login available on your computer, you must activate it and be logged on as such before you install or use this simulator... Though, I have found that RF6 will occasionally work on my non-administrator login, but this is a mystery as to whether it should or should not (could just be a glitch in my system). Any way, if your operating system is "Vista" (I am to understand that this method also works for Windows 7 as-well), and you are unsure how to activate the administrator user account, the steps below should help you. If anyone has any additional helpful info, please feel free to post it. If you're a little apprehensive about making these changes to your system yourself, or if you have a different operating system, you can contact RealFlight customer support for assistance at (217) 398-8970 option 1, or your local computer store can do it for you, often free or very cheap, as it's a fairly simple procedure for the pro's.

Accessing Hidden "Administrator" account for Vista (and Windows 7):
1. Log on to Vista using your normal username and password.
2. Click on the "Start" button
3. Click on "Search files and folders".
4. In the search field, Type the following: command prompt
You should see an icon and the words "Command Prompt" at the top of the search list.
5. Put your cursor over the "command Prompt" icon and right-click. A menu window will open. Locate "Run as administrator" in this window and click it. A DOS box will open.
6. In the black "DOS box", type the following at the command prompt line: net help user
7. The idea of the last command is just to observe the options for Net User. In particular, examine the syntax to set the password (ensures you are at the correct "folder").
8. Now, you must choose a password to use when you log on as administrator. I have chosen my password to be: pa$$worD. You may want to choose whatever password suits you.
9. To set your password, type the following at the command prompt: net user administrator pa$$worD
You should get confirmation that the command was completed successfully.
10. After you have set your password, type the following at the command prompt:
net user administrator /active:yes
Once again, you should get a message that the command was successful.
11. Once complete, close all windows and click the "Start" icon, then select "Shut Down". Select "Switch User". You should now see two user accounts, your normal one, and "Administrator".
12. To log on as Administrator, simply click it and type in your newly set password as set in steps 8 and 9.
You must ensure you are typing the commands exactly as seen above in the DOS window, or you will get errors and fail to activate the administrator user account. Common mistakes are as follows: There should be no space between the word "active" and the colon. Also, you must not forget to use the "/" (see example below).
net user administrator active:yes is wrong
net user administrator /active: yes is wrong
net user administrator /active:yes is correct

Overview:
All-in-all, I highly recommend this outstanding, top quality, reasonably priced and realistic RC flight simulator from Great Planes! It is designed for the novice pilot, but also a valuable tool for skilled pilots who wish to keep their razors edge abilities.

As with all my reviews, the above is only my opinion or observation of an item that I own or have tested. Consider that it is possible that I may have either purchased/tested a faulty unit or an exceptionally good one. Your experience may differ from mine, better or worse. Paying attention to the up or down trend from several reviewers will help you make an educated decision on whether or not the item is for you.
Best of Luck and Happy Flying!!

5Great Sim  Jan 28, 2012 By Gordon B. West "Gw"
This is NOT a game, this is a sim and that is good! This is a very, very realistic sim. This sim can be set up to be as hard to fly as real R/C planes and helicopters. Seriously, if you can fly this sim without crashing, you'll be able to fly real R/C planes and helicopters. The R/C controller that comes with this feels and works exactly the same as a real one so you won't need to "re-learn" anything when you start flying for real.

5A must-have for the RC heli novice  Feb 27, 2012 By ppmd "Professional"
As a novice helicopter RC flyer, I quickly learned that these are fairly delicate machines which can break if you repeatedly crash them, however "minor" may be the crash. My 4-channel helicopter was in the shop for repairs and I was thinking I can just hop on a 6-channel and "go". I was smart enough to take the advice of the local hobby store owner and hold off on purchasing a 6-channel. Instead, I bought RF6 simulator.

I am very glad I did!

If you think you are ready to fly a 6-channel after feeling confident with a fixed-pitch 4-channel, you better think twice. If the helis in RF6 are anything like the real thing, RF6 is a MUST-purchase before you spend the money on a 6-channel. It is sooo much more difficult to fly a 6-channel than a 4-channel heli!

The installation on a Windows 7 Professional was straightforward, and the update was automatic with a few clicks of the mouse. I was then able to launch the software quickly. I especially enjoy the training (heli hover, heli autorotation, and heli orientation) portions of the software to get a novice acquainted. The full-size RC "radio" controller is actually made by Futaba, a reputable RC radio company.

The background is fairly realistic, and you can "dial in" any sun, wind, and thermal characteristics of your flying environment. As far as I can tell, and in my limited RC helicopter experience, this is a very real representation of actually flying a 6-channel RC (including how the heli responds when you crash into things). I have flown into objects, have the canopy and one of the landing skids "break off" (as rendered by RF6), and still able to fly it "crippled" with the image depicting the physical damage to the heli. That's pretty darn realistic!

I am still spending a lot of time on the Tutor Trainer, which is one of the helicopters in RF6. If you are thinking of spending hundreds of dollars on a 6-channel, I would highly recommend that you get the RF6.

5great product  Jan 13, 2012 By really Really
Love this software. Had one problem getting the software to recognize the controller was plugged in on win 7. I called the company for support they gave me directions to go into the properties of the software and change the privileges to administrator. This cured the problem. No more problems to speak of.
